The deadline for filing the IRPF (Personal Income Tax) 2026 declaration ends at 11:59 pm this Friday (29). The Federal Revenue expects to receive 44 million declarations this year, but around 30% of the taxpayers expected by the Tax Authorities have not yet sent the document by this weekend.

To date, more than 31.5 million declarations have been sent to the Tax Authorities. Of this total, 62% are eligible for a refund, 21% are eligible for payment and 17% have no tax debts. In all batches this year, declarations returned total 9.6 million by May and total more than R$ 17.8 billion.

Delivering the declaration is mandatory for anyone who meets the criteria defined by the Revenue, such as having received taxable income above R$35,584 in 2025, owning assets above R$800 thousand or having carried out operations on the Stock Exchange, among other cases.

People who received up to two monthly minimum wages in 2025 are exempt from making the declaration. Anyone who misses the deadline is subject to a minimum fine of R$165.74, which can reach 20% of the tax due. Furthermore, the CPF may be pending with the Federal Revenue Service.

The taxpayer can make the declaration through different channels, such as the PGD (Declaration Generator Program), available for download on the agency's official portal, or through the "My Income Tax" system, accessed with a Gov.br account.

Among the main documents required are income reports provided by employers and banks, proof of medical and educational expenses, payment receipts, data on assets and investments, as well as information on dependents.

Experts warn that leaving the filling out until the last few days increases the risk of errors and falling into the so-called "fine mesh", a Revenue verification mechanism that crosses the information declared by the taxpayer with data sent by companies, financial institutions and service providers.

Among the most common errors are omission of income, discrepancy in values, incorrect entry of medical expenses and failures in the registration of dependents.

To avoid problems, the guideline is to check all data before sending, use the pre-filled declaration when possible and keep receipts and proof for at least five years. The IRS also recommends paying attention to scams involving false messages about CPF refunds or regularization.

After delivery, the taxpayer can monitor the processing of the declaration through the e-CAC portal, accessing the "My Income Tax" area. If there is any inconsistency, it is possible to send a rectifying statement to correct the information.
