Despite being leader of the Brazilian Championship, Palmeiras arrives under pressure for the direct confrontation against Flamengo this Saturday (23). After the defeat to Cerro Porteño in the Libertadores last Wednesday (20), coach Abel Ferreira began to be questioned even more in his role by the fans.

Second place in Group F of the continental competition, the team has not yet secured qualification for the round of 16 and depends on a stumble from Cerro in the last round if it wants to advance in first place in the group.

In the Brasileirão, Palmeiras comes from three draws against Cruzeiro, Remo and Santos, and has lost the "fat" advantage it had against Flamengo, second placed, and this round's opponent.

With 35 points, Abel Ferreira's team saw Rubro-negro from Rio reach 31 points and pull over. Furthermore, the team led by Léo Jardim has one game in hand and, if they beat Palmeiras in this Saturday's match, it would only depend on themselves to take the lead.

Abel Ferreira pressured
The setback against Cerro in the middle of Allianz Parque was the last straw for Abel Ferreira for Palmeiras' main organized fans. Mancha Verde published a strong manifesto on social media calling for the Portuguese to leave.

With the title "Thank you, Abel. It's over. Bye", the organizer stated that Palmeiras has experienced a "mirage" in recent years and criticized the team's recent performance, despite consistent campaigns in terms of numbers.

Mancha Verde also criticized Abel's stance off the field, in addition to calling out president Leila Pereira and football director Anderson Barros.

"As long as you're happy..."
On Wednesday (20), the day of the match against Cerro Porteño, Leila Pereira, president of Palmeiras, commented on the possible departure of coach Abel Ferreira.

Before the ball rolled, the agent highlighted, in an interview with ESPN, that Abel's contract with Palmeiras, renewed in December 2025 and which lasts until December 2027, does not include a termination fine.

"I don't have that concern (Abel leaving). I'm very sure that Abel is very happy here with us. So I don't think he would be interested in leaving. But I'll tell you honestly, I want Abel here happy. As long as he's happy, he's well, right? I want him here with us. The day he's not happy, that he thinks his cycle is over, I have no doubt he'll talk to me", declared Leila Pereira.

Flamengo x Palmeiras
Flamengo and Palmeiras face each other this Saturday (23), at 9pm (Brasília time), in a game valid for the 17th round of the Brazilian Championship. The direct duel between leader and vice-leader takes place at Maracanã, in Rio de Janeiro, and will be broadcast in real time by CNN Esportes.
