President Volodymyr Zelenskiy stated in a letter to EU (European Union) leaders that the German proposal to grant Ukraine the status of an "associate" member of the bloc is "unfair", as it would leave Kiev without a voice in relation to other countries.
German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has suggested allowing Ukraine to participate in EU meetings without voting rights as an intermediate step towards full membership of the bloc, which he said could facilitate a deal to end the four-year war triggered by the Russian invasion.
In response, Zelensky stated in his letter, sent on Friday night (22) and analyzed by Reuters, that the dismissal of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán - a staunch opponent of Ukraine's accession to the EU - following last month's elections, created the opportunity for substantial progress in accession negotiations.
