Insecurity and cost of living explain voter apprehension, says expert

Public insecurity and the high cost of living are the main factors that fuel the apprehension of the Brazilian population, according to Mauricio Moura, founder of the Ideia research institute. Participating in WW Especial, he analyzed data from recent surveys to explain the state of mind of Brazilians in the current scenario.

Moura highlighted that, despite Brazil not experiencing an external armed conflict, the country has very alarming public security levels. "The feeling of insecurity is a very widespread feeling among the population," he stated. According to him, topics such as robbery, theft, assault, homicide and organized crime have always been widely present in the public debate.

The researcher also highlighted that in the recent cycle the issue of feminicide and violence against women gained a very strong dimension. "Maybe it wasn't reported in the past and we didn't have statistics that fully reflected reality, but now it's been reported," he explained. This combination of factors generates, according to Moura, "a daily apprehension for people, in terms of mobility and safety".

Cost of living puts pressure on families even with employment and income
In the economic field, Moura recognized that formal indicators, such as unemployment, inflation and economic growth, are not bad. However, he drew attention to a phenomenon that goes beyond traditional statistics: the cost of living. "People in Brazil today are more in debt, they even have work, they have income, but the income does not cover the expenses and costs of living, especially in the country's metropolitan regions," he said.

This growing debt and the inability to bear routine costs, according to the researcher, "brings a huge degree of apprehension". Moura also drew a parallel with the situation in the United States, where the issue of the ability to cover living costs has also become a central topic in the public debate.

Moura also pointed out a generational concern. According to him, the generation formed in the 1990s and 2000s experienced a clear improvement in living conditions in Brazil, in terms of health, economy and education. The current generation faces much more difficulty in converting years of study into sufficient income to match or exceed the standard of living of the previous generation.

"This combination of apprehensions is obviously linked to politics, because they see that politics is not solving these problems", concluded Moura. For him, this accumulated feeling should be translated at the polls in the 2026 elections.
