President Donald Trump met with top U.S. national security officials on Friday as he weighs the path forward in the war with Iran, a person familiar with the meeting said.

The White House meeting - routinely held by Trump - came as diplomatic efforts continue in an attempt to secure a deal to end the war. And it ended without a decision about what happens next.

Delegations from Qatar and Pakistan traveled to Tehran in the hope of putting an end to the conflict, Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman Ismail Baghaei said on Friday, according to Iranian state agency IRNA. But Baghaei added that there were still "very deep" differences between the Iranian and American positions, and that reaching an agreement would require "more time and new negotiations", according to IRNA.

Trump, who has expressed frustration with the pace of negotiations, received options to resume military actions. He said he came within an hour of ordering strikes earlier this week, but backed off after a request from Gulf countries. On Friday, he canceled plans to travel to his New Jersey golf resort over the weekend and confirmed he will not attend his son's wedding in the Bahamas - opting to remain in Washington due to what he called "government-related circumstances and my love for the United States of America."

"I feel it is important for me to remain in Washington, D.C., at the White House, during this important time," he wrote in Truth Social, in explaining his expected absence from Donald Trump Jr.'s wedding. Earlier, Trump had said the ceremony took place at an inappropriate time, citing "everything to do with Iran and other things."

Among the officials present at Friday's national security meeting were Vice President JD Vance and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth. Gen. Dan Caine, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, referenced a meeting in the Oval Office on Friday during a commencement address at the U.S. Naval Academy in Annapolis.

It is not yet clear how Trump will proceed. Earlier this week, he gave Iran an informal deadline of early next week to present a proposal deemed adequate to end the war.

Some authorities have expressed optimism about the progress of negotiations, but so far it is not clear how the main impasses between the two countries will be resolved.
