Activists released from Israeli custody after being detained on a flotilla trying to bring humanitarian aid to Gaza were subjected to abuse, organizers said on Friday (22). Several were hospitalized with injuries and at least 15 reported sexual assaults, including rape.

Israel's prison service did not immediately respond to requests for comment on the charges on Friday, a public holiday in Israel. The Israeli military referred questions to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which forwarded them to the prison service.

On Thursday (21), the prison service declared that "all prisoners and detainees are held in accordance with the law, with full respect for their fundamental rights and under the supervision of professional and trained prison staff."

"Medical care is provided in accordance with professional medical judgment and in accordance with Ministry of Health guidelines," he added.

Israeli forces arrested 430 people aboard 50 ships in international waters on Tuesday (19) to stop a flotilla of volunteers trying to bring humanitarian aid supplies to the Gaza Strip.

Allegations of abuse will increase pressure on Israeli authorities to explain their treatment of detainees, following the release of a video of an Israeli minister in a prison mocking some of the activists, who were tied up and on their knees. The images sparked international outrage.

Italy said EU (European Union) members were discussing imposing sanctions on Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir.

"At least 15 cases of sexual assault, including rape. Shot with rubber bullets at close range." "Dozens of people with broken bones," organizers of the Sumud Global Flotilla posted on the social media app Telegram.

"While the entire world is watching the suffering of our participants, we cannot stress enough that this is just a glimpse of the brutality that Israel inflicts on Palestinian hostages on a daily basis," he added.

"Stripped naked, thrown to the ground, kicked"
"We were stripped naked, thrown to the ground and kicked." Many of us were hit with stun guns, some were sexually assaulted and others were denied access to a lawyer," Luca Poggi, an Italian economist who was among those detained on board the flotilla, told Reuters.

Sabrina Charik, who helped organize the return of 37 French nationals from the flotilla, said five French participants were hospitalized in Türkiye, some with broken ribs or fractured vertebrae. Some made detailed accusations of sexual violence, including rape, she said.

In an Instagram post from an activist group verified by Reuters, Frenchman Adrien Jouen showed bruises on his back and forearms.

Activists said some of the alleged abuses occurred at sea, following interception by the Israeli Navy, and others following arrest and detention in Israel.

Activists from several European countries were due to arrive home on flights from Türkiye after being deported from Israel on Thursday.

Spanish Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares told reporters that 44 Spanish members of the flotilla were expected to arrive throughout Friday on flights from Istanbul to Madrid and Barcelona.

Four of them received medical treatment for their injuries, he added.

Western governments expressed their outrage on Thursday after Ben-Gvir published a video mocking activists tied to the floor in a prison.

Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani said on the sidelines of the NATO meeting in Sweden that he was in contact with all his EU counterparts "so that there can be a quick decision on the imposition of sanctions" on Ben-Gvir.

EU diplomacy chief Kaja Kallas last year proposed imposing sanctions on Ben-Gvir and another Israeli minister, but the proposal did not gain the necessary support from all 27 EU member states at the time.

"EU sanctions are discussed and adopted by the 27 EU member states, and this happens unanimously," EU diplomacy spokesman Anouar El Anouni told the European Commission's daily press conference on Friday, adding that he could not comment on confidential discussions on sanctions.

Itamaraty condemns attitude
Itamaraty summoned the head of the Israeli embassy in Brazil, Rasha Athamni, to request clarification on the released video.

In a statement, the Brazilian Ministry of Foreign Affairs condemned the attitude of the Israeli authorities, classifying it as "degrading and humiliating".

Itamaraty also stated that the interception of vessels belonging to the flotilla in international waters is illegal, and requested the immediate release of the activists, including four Brazilian citizens who are among those detained.
