Peruvian Ignacio Buse is experiencing the best phase of his career and has become one of the biggest stories of the week in world tennis. At 22 years old, the athlete is in the final of the ATP 500 in Hamburg after an unlikely campaign on German clay, which included victories over more experienced and established players on the circuit.

João Fonseca's executioner at this year's Rio Open, Buse defeated the American Aleksandar Kovacevic by 2 sets to 0, with splits of 6/1 and 6/4, and secured an unprecedented place in the tournament's final. Before that, the Peruvian had already eliminated current champion Flavio Cobolli, as well as names like Jakub Mensik and Ugo Humbert.

The campaign draws even more attention because Ignacio needed to compete in qualifying to enter the main draw. He became only the sixth player from qualifying to reach the final of the ATP 500 in Hamburg and the first to achieve the feat since 2018, when Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili reached the tournament's final.

From childhood in Peru to leaping up the rankings
Born in Peru, Ignacio Buse started playing tennis at a very young age at the Country Club de Villa, where his father, Hans, worked as a coach. In interviews, the athlete himself often says that he "grew up with a racket in his hand" and that he started playing the sport when he was two or three years old.

A standout in the youth categories, Buse reached ninth place in the ITF youth world rankings in 2022. That same year, he reached the youth Roland Garros doubles final and the youth US Open semifinal alongside compatriot Bueno.

The Peruvian even committed to the University of Georgia, in the United States, but chose not to pursue university tennis and decided to turn professional. After that, he moved to Barcelona, where he started training at the Tennis Empowerment Center Carles Ferrer Salat.

Another curious detail of his career is his proximity to Albert Costa, Roland Garros champion, who acts as a kind of mentor to the young Peruvian.

Off the court, Ignacio also has a connection with a well-known name in international gastronomy. His uncle is Gastón Acurio, renowned chef and reference for Peruvian cuisine in the world.

Meteoric rise in 2025 and 2026
Buse's evolution in the ATP rankings is impressive. In August 2023, it was ranked only 722nd in the world. Less than three years later, he is already close to the circuit's elite.

The most significant jump took place from 2025 onwards. The Peruvian entered the top 200 in May of that year and reached his first ATP semi-final in Gstaad, becoming the youngest tennis player from Peru to reach an ATP-level semi-final since 1989.

Shortly afterwards, he won the first Challenger title of his career in Heilbronn-Bad Rappenau and made his Grand Slam main draw debut at the 2025 US Open.

Now, the campaign in Hamburg should take him into the top 40 of the world rankings for the first time. If he wins the title, Buse will jump to 31st place in the ATP, just behind João Fonseca, current number 30 in the world.

The path could cross again with João Fonseca
The Peruvian's growth also reignites a recent rivalry with João Fonseca. In February this year, Ignacio surprised the Brazilian at the Rio Open and advanced to the semifinals of the Rio tournament.

At the time, he was only 91st in the rankings. Since then, he has accumulated important results on clay and has come to be treated as one of the South American promises of the new generation.

After the final in Hamburg, Buse will head to Roland Garros, where he will debut against Russian Andrey Rublev. There is even the possibility of a new duel against João Fonseca in the quarterfinals of the French Grand Slam if both advance in their respective brackets.
