US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said this Friday (22) that the United States has seen some progress in negotiations with Iran, but stressed that there is still a lot of work to be done.

The statement was made amid meetings between Pakistani intermediaries and increased diplomatic efforts to end the conflict.

When commenting on the progress of the negotiations, Rubio adopted a cautious tone. "There has been some progress, I wouldn't exaggerate, I wouldn't minimize it either," he said, leaving the assessment of the current stage of negotiations open.

Points of impasse between the US and Iran
Iranian sources told the Reuters news agency that, although differences between the two sides have diminished, there are still important points of divergence.

One of the main ones is the issue of the delivery of enriched uranium held in Iran, estimated at around 440kg. The United States claims that the material could be used to produce a nuclear weapon, while Iran maintains that it is material intended for peaceful purposes.

Another central point is control over the Strait of Hormuz. Iran took control of the waterway, imposing a strict crossing with intense inspection and charging fees from countries that wish to use it.

Rubio called Iranian plans to create a toll system there unacceptable, adding that the United States is dealing with a very difficult group of people and that if the situation does not change, American President Donald Trump has made it clear that there are other options available - a reference to the possible resumption of attacks.

Intermediation by Qatar and Pakistan
Rubio also stated that the United States did not request help from NATO to operate in the Strait of Hormuz, but signaled that a plan B would be needed if Iran refuses to reopen the passage.

In the diplomatic sphere, there was a conversation between the Pakistani interior minister - who has been mediating the talks - and the Iranian foreign minister.

Qatar also entered this round of negotiations, sending a team of negotiators to Tehran with the aim of trying to resolve the central differences.

Qatar participation is seen with expectation, given the country's possibly closer role in relation to the United States compared to Pakistan.

Iran contradicts American version
The spokesman for the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in turn, stated, according to the state news agency IRNA, that details related to the nuclear issue are not being discussed at this stage of the negotiations.

He also said he could not say that the parties had definitively reached a conclusion, and classified the differences between Iran and the United States as still deep and significant - an assessment that contrasts with Rubio's speech, making the information still very inconsistent.

The general perception is that negotiations have gone back to a point before the start of the conflict.
