SpaceX aims to reach 10,000 launches per year in just five years, but US officials say the company will need to demonstrate greater reliability before an expansion of this magnitude is approved.
The information was released by Bryan Bedford, head of the Federal Aviation Administration last Wednesday (20). He said he met with SpaceX President Gwynne Shotwell, who presented him with the company's ambitious goal. In 2025, SpaceX performed 170 launches and placed approximately 2,500 satellites into orbit.
In a video interview with Forbes shown this week, SpaceX CEO Elon Musk stated that the company already has around 10,000 satellites in orbit and intends to launch another 10,000 communications satellites per year, although without specifying a deadline.

The FAA licenses all commercial space launches and takes steps to expedite major hurdles and impose restrictions to ensure that space launches or accidents do not interfere with passenger air traffic.
Bedford said the goal of the meeting with SpaceX "was to look at the limitations that we see and what we can do in terms of planning now to put us in a position to accommodate that kind of long-term goal."

SpaceX did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Bedford said that he and Shotwell "had a very frank conversation" and that the company "is going to have to challenge them" and that "they are going to have to demand their trustworthiness."
The head of the FAA also highlighted that President Donald Trump wants to take the United States back to the Moon before 2028. "To do that, we will have to work with industry to unlock this innovation," he added.
Bedford also stated that the FAA is not currently the main limiting factor for space launches. "I can imagine a future where we are the bottleneck because we are not allocating enough funding to our space team," he said.
He said the FAA is reviewing data from previous launches to better understand the risks. To address safety concerns, the FAA needs to ban flights in some areas at the time of launch and "that could be very disruptive," Bedford said.
In January, SpaceX announced its intention to develop a constellation of up to 1 million satellites in Earth orbit, powered by solar energy to power artificial intelligence data centers.
