Galvão Bueno undergoes surgery for a herniated disc: how does the problem arise?

Presenter Galvão Bueno, 75, underwent surgery to remove a herniated disc, this Friday (22). The journalist was admitted to Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein, in São Paulo, and is expected to recover before covering the World Cup that he will do on SBT, starting in June.

A herniated disc occurs when part of an intervertebral disc shifts, putting pressure on nerve roots or even the spinal cord.

The condition directly affects the vertebrae of the spine, causing severe pain, something reported by the veteran himself during the presentation of "Galvão F.C.", a program he currently has on Silvio Santos' channel (1930-2026).

Galvão Bueno's problem tends to worsen over time, causing the pain to radiate to other areas of the body, such as arms and legs, depending on the position and location of the hernia.

According to Daniel Oliveira, orthopedic spine doctor and director of the Center for Orthopedics and Traumatology in Belo Horizonte, patients who suffer from this condition may suffer from tingling, weakness or loss of sensitivity in the affected areas.

"This condition can be caused by several factors, such as aging, natural wear and tear, inadequate weight lifting, incorrect posture and genetic factors, for example," the doctor told CNN Brasil.

Treatments of the disease
Herniated disc surgery occurs in more serious cases, but conservative treatment may include rest, use of anti-inflammatory medications and physical therapy, which does not completely resolve the problem.

"Today, minimally invasive spine surgery for herniated discs known as spinal endoscopy, is an advanced procedure that offers a less aggressive alternative to traditional surgical techniques," explained Oliveira.

The professional explained that the procedure is carried out through a small incision, removing only the region of tissue that is herniated, causing less trauma and speeding up the recovery process.
