Cryptocurrency "mining" plays a role in the creation and security of these virtual assets. It also involves the process of validating and verifying transactions on a decentralized network, such as blockchain.

According to the investigations, which are carried out in conjunction with the Civil Police of the State of Piauí, the criminals pretended to be bank security employees and called customers saying that there had been some compromise in the victims' accounts.

The group induced people to call a supposed center, created by them, and, from there, they were able to take control of their accounts and banking applications. The gang managed to carry out several fraudulent transfers and transactions.

The simultaneous action to comply with court orders in Rio de Janeiro and Piauí aimed to arrest those involved, in addition to seizing electronic devices, documents and financial assets that could help identify other members of the scheme and recover the losses caused to the victims.

The operation is the result of investigations by the Police Station for the Repression of Organized Criminal Actions and Special Inquiries (Draco) and the 26th DP (Todos Santos). The operation is supported by the Special Resources Coordination (Core) and teams from the general police departments of the Capital (DGPC), Baixada (DGPB), Interior (DGPI) and Specialized Police (DGPE).

What is cryptocurrency mining?
If paper money is printed by institutions like the Mint, the process of "making" cryptocurrencies is called mining.

Cryptocurrency mining is involved in the so-called blockchain, the base system for cryptoassets. The blockchain is made up of pieces of code (blocks), which are linked together (the network).

It is in these blocks that information is recorded, such as transaction data from Alan de Genaro, professor at Fundação Getúlio Vargas (FGV), who states that the mining process involves "verifying whether the information presented in one of these blocks is true or not".

How does cryptocurrency mining work?
Cryptocurrency mining works as a process to validate and include new transactions in the blockchain, which is a public database that records users' movement history.

If it is true, the block is incorporated into the network and gains an encryption code.

To access a block on the network, for example, to steal information, it is necessary to unravel the encryption of all previous blocks, hence its security.

"Miners are validators of information, because there is no regulatory entity that says that a person has x amount of money in their account, or can transfer x amount of money to another person", says the professor.

Once the information validation process has been completed, transactions involving cryptocurrencies can be carried out. As a form of payment for the work, the miner receives cryptocurrencies that were stored, and which begin to circulate on the market.

Mining is also responsible for putting more digital currencies into circulation, following the rules of each protocol.
