The cardiologist and presenter of "CNN Signs Vitals", Dr. Roberto Kalil Filho, 66, will take over the No. 1 chair of the National Academy of Medicine, this Friday (22).
Upon assuming the title, whose patron is Academic Joaquim Cândido Soares de Meirelles, Kalil will join the list of the most well-recognized specialists in Brazil. From today onwards, the doctor will share the bench with 100 other exponents of national medicine.
Before Kalil, until mid-2025, his place was occupied by pulmonologist Dr. José Manoel Jansen. Currently, Paulo Niemeyer Filho, José de Jesus Camargo and academic Pietro Novellino are some of the other relevant names that are part of the institution.

Oswaldo Cruz
Oswaldo Cruz is a reference in combating the epidemics of yellow fever, bubonic plague and smallpox in Brazil - Casa de Oswaldo Cruz Collection (COC/Fiocruz)
Born in São Luís do Paraitinga, Oswaldo Cruz established himself as one of the great names in Brazilian science. During his career, he became a reference when he took on combat campaigns aimed at preventing epidemics of yellow fever, bubonic plague and smallpox.
At the end of his life, he created the Oswaldo Cruz Institution, currently known as Fiocruz, and in 1913 he was elected member of the Brazilian Academy of Letters (ABL). He occupied chair 90 of the ANM and later became patron of the position.

Carlos Chagas

Doctor, professor, scientist and essayist, Carlos Chagas gained the spotlight of Brazilian science when he discovered Chagas disease and identified its causative agents. He was an apprentice to Miguel Couto and a student at the former Oswaldo Cruz Institute.
In 1910, his work was recognized by the Academy and he received the title of Extranumerary Full Member, as there were no seats available yet. Victim of a myocardial infarction, at the age of 55, Chagas spent the last years of his life winning awards and standing out in Brazilian medicine.
Currently, he is patron of chair 86, occupied by Maurício Rocha e Silva. Inspired by their father, his two sons, Evandro Chagas and Carlos Chagas Filho, also pursued scientific careers.
Miguel Couto
Miguel Couto was elected full member of the National Academy of Medicine and held a chair at the Brazilian Academy of Letters - Reproduction/Academia Brasileira de Letras
A doctor graduated from the Faculty of Rio de Janeiro and a scholar, Miguel Couto presided over the National Academy of Medicine from 1913 to 1934. During his career, he became one of the great names in clinical medicine and education in the country.
In addition to being recognized by the institution, Couto also occupied seat 40 of the ABL for his work and academic influence. Patron of chair 9, he has Osvaldo José Moreira do Nascimento as his successor.
Ivo Pitanguy

Internationally recognized for his work as a plastic surgeon, Ivo was awarded the main honors in Brazil and around the world, including: president of the Museum of Modern Art of Rio de Janeiro, Officier of L'Ordre de la Légion d'Honneur and Grand Master of the Order of Rio Branco - Commander Degree.
Died in August 2016, Pitanguy contributed to Brazilian science until his last days. During his lifetime, he occupied chair 67, whose patron was Fernando Augusto Ribeiro de Magalhães.
Roberto Kalil Filho's inauguration ceremony will take place this Friday (22) in Rio de Janeiro, starting at 8pm.
