Planalto bets on a meeting between Lula and Trump to minimize Flávio's visit

Members of the Palácio do Planalto interviewed by CNN Brasil assessed that the recent rapprochement between President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT) and the President of the United States, Donald Trump, reduces the political impact of a possible meeting between Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, a pre-candidate for President for the PL, and the Republican in the White House, scheduled for next week.

Sources interviewed by CNN Brasil stated, however, that the Brazilian government does not intend to interfere to veto this possible meeting between Flávio and Trump. The assessment is that the Republican's rapprochement with the Bolsonaro family is nothing new.

Still, if the meeting takes place, Planalto intends to monitor the developments of the visit and react quickly to any consequences considered negative for Brazil.

The Brazilian government's reading is that the possible meeting next week differs from the tariff arrangements in 2025, due to Lula's visit to Trump on Thursday (7).

According to interlocutors from the Brazilian government, the recent rapprochement between the PT and the Republican party has reduced the scope for action of the Brazilian and American Bolsonaro wing in the White House.

According to members of Flávio's campaign, the invitation came from the White House and was mediated by the US Secretary of State, Marco Rubio. The negotiation also involved former federal deputy Eduardo Bolsonaro, brother of the PL pre-candidate.

Privately, Brazilian government assistants state that, to date, there has been no official communication to Palácio do Planalto about this possible meeting.

The possibility of a visit to Trump comes at a time when Flávio's campaign is experiencing a crisis of confidence, after leaked messages and audio of the senator asking for money from the owner of Banco Master, Daniel Vorcaro. On Thursday (21), publicist Eduardo Fischer took over marketing for the senator.

In Planalto, the reading is that a possible visit by Flávio to the United States would be a one-off, in search of a positive agenda in the midst of the crisis involving Banco Master, and would hardly translate into explicit support from the White House for the Bolsonarist in the October elections.

Even so, government officials recognize that the scenario requires observation.
