The new canine star on the streets of Cannes already has a name. This Friday (22), the festival's Palma Canina (Dog Palm) crowned Yuri, the protagonist of the film "La perra", by Chilean director Dominga Sotomayor. The film features Brazilian Selton Mello in the cast.
Created in 2001 on the sidelines of the Cannes Film Festival, this informal award crowns the best canine performances on the big screen, becoming one of the event's most eccentric and beloved traditions.
This year, the ceremony was held on a beach on the Cannes promenade.
"I couldn't imagine a more special award for 'La perra'", an emotional Sotomayor said upon receiving the award: a red collar of leather.
Presented at Directors' Fortnight, the film follows Silvia, an algae collector who lives on a wild island in Chile and adopts Yuri, an abandoned puppy who ends up unearthing deep traumas.
In an interview with AFP, the director explained that the protagonist adopts the dog "almost on impulse", without suspecting everything that this will awaken in her.
Yuri was played by two different dogs - a puppy and an adult - both rescued and now adopted by families in Chile, said Sotomayor.
The Grand Jury Prize, the second most important recognition, went to Lola, a border terrier from the film "I see buildings fall like lightning", by British director Clio Barnard.
The jury also celebrated the "very feminine" character of this edition: the two award-winning films were directed by women and starred by dogs.
Among the historic winners of the Palma Canina is Brandy, from "Once Upon a Time in... Hollywood", whose award was received by Quentin Tarantino himself. In 2021, Tilda Swinton accepted the award on behalf of her own dogs for her appearances in "The Souvenir".
