The cardiologist and presenter of "CNN Sinais Vitais", Dr. Roberto Kalil Filho, takes office this Friday (22) as a full member of the ANM (National Academy of Medicine), a maximum recognition of medicine in Brazil.

The specialist now occupies chair no. 01, whose patron is Academic Joaquim Cândido Soares de Meirelles. Until 2025, the chair was occupied by pulmonologist Dr. José Manoel Jansen, who passed away in August 2025. The ceremony will take place this Friday (22) in Rio de Janeiro starting at 8 pm.

With his inauguration, Kalil joins the select group of 100 full members of the institution, where he will share the bench with exponents of Brazilian medicine, such as neurosurgeon Paulo Niemeyer Filho, a reference in the treatment of tumors and aneurysms; José de Jesus Camargo, a pioneer in performing the first lung transplant in Latin America; and academic Pietro Novellino, exponent in teaching and institutional leadership.

How is the selection made?
The selection of ANM members is made upon the death of a full member or when a holder becomes an emeritus member, at which point the vacancy opens. Vacancies can be allocated to the Sections of Medicine, Surgery or Sciences Applied to Medicine.

The National Academy of Medicine has 100 full members, distributed among the three sections of the institution. Founded on June 30, 1829, initially under the name of Sociedade de Medicina do Rio de Janeiro, the Academy was created with the aim of contributing to the study, discussion and development of medicine, surgery, public health and related sciences, in addition to acting as an advisory body to the government on topics related to health and medical education.

Among the highlights who have already occupied chairs at the institution are Oswaldo Cruz, a reference in combating the epidemics of yellow fever, bubonic plague and smallpox in Brazil; Carlos Chagas, discoverer of Chagas Disease; Miguel Couto, reference in clinical medicine and education in the country; and Ivo Pintaguy, internationally recognized in plastic surgery.
