Rio de Janeiro has second earthquake in less than 48 hours

Um novo tremor de terra, desta vez de magnitude 3.1, atingiu a costa do Rio de Janeiro na manhã desta sexta-feira (22). O caso ocorreu a cerca de 100 quilômetros do município de Maricá, por volta das 6h50, e é o segundo na região em menos de 48 horas.

According to RSBR (Brazilian Seismographic Network), which recorded the earthquake, there are still no reports that the tremor was felt by the population.

O evento anterior, ocorrido por volta das 5h desta quinta-feira (21), teve magnitude 3.3.

De acordo com o sismólogo do Observatório Nacional e da RSBR, Dr. Gilberto Leite, esse tipo de tremor é relativamente comum no Brasil.

"Brazil records small earthquakes with a certain frequency, especially due to the tectonic tensions that act on the Earth's crust. In most cases, these tremors are of low magnitude and are not felt", he explains.

Gilberto ressaltou ainda que não é possível prever o comportamento da atividade sísmica na região. In other words, there is no way of knowing whether a new tremor will occur, when it might happen, or what its magnitude will be.

Em entrevista à CNN Brasil, o sismólogo Bruno Collaço afirmou que "tremores como esse têm pouca chance de causar problemas sérios."

Os abalos sísmicos foram registrados pelas estações da Rede Sismográfica Brasileira (RSBR) e analisados pelo Centro de Sismologia da USP. A RSBR é coordenada pelo Observatório Nacional (ON/MCTI) com apoio do Serviço Geológico do Brasil (SGB/CPRM).
