President of Senegal sanctions law that doubles punishment for homosexuality
The Prime Minister of Senegal, Ousmane Sonko, condemned this Friday (22) the "tyranny" of the West for wanting, according to him, to "impose" homosexuality and rejected any attempt to stop the application of a new law that toughens penalties for relationships between people of the same sex.
"There is a kind of tyranny. We are eight billion human beings in the world, but there is a small nucleus called the West (...) which, because it has resources and controls the media, wants to impose [homosexuality] on the rest of the world", declared Sonko in a speech before parliamentarians.
Sonko stated that, after the approval of the law, he heard a lot of criticism of Senegal, especially in France.
"If they chose these practices, it is their problem, but we have nothing to learn from them, absolutely nothing", he added.
Contrary to the West's stance, that "wants to impose its dictate", no Asian, African or Arab country criticizes Senegal, said the prime minister.

At the end of March, President Bassirou Diomaye Faye enacted a law that doubles the maximum sentence for same-sex relationships, amid a repressive campaign against the LGBTQIA+ community in the country.
Since then, the country has carried out dozens of arrests based on this legislation.
The new law punishes "acts against nature", a term used to designate relationships between people of the same sex, with sentences of five to ten years in prison, compared to one to five years previously.
The legislation also provides for sentences of three to seven years in prison for anyone found guilty of promoting or financing relationships between people of the same sex.
