Manchester United announces Michael Carrick will remain until 2028

Manchester United announced this Friday (22) the appointment of Michael Carrick as the team's permanent coach. The former midfielder signed a contract until 2028 after leading a turnaround in the club's performance in less than half a season.

At 44, the Englishman led United to 11 wins in 16 matches, including triumphs over Arsenal, Manchester City, Liverpool and Chelsea. The sequence saw the team rise to third place in the Premier League and guarantee a place in the next edition of the Champions League.

"From the moment I arrived here 20 years ago, I felt the magic of Manchester United. Carrying the responsibility of leading this special club fills me with enormous pride," Carrick said in a statement released by the club.

Carrick exceeds expectations
Initially hired as a caretaker to replace Ruben Amorim, Carrick exceeded expectations and changed the atmosphere at Old Trafford, receiving support from the squad to remain in the role.

The former midfielder had already led United on an interim basis in 2021, after the dismissal of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. As a player, he played 464 matches for the club in all competitions, winning five Premier League titles and the 2008 Champions League.

In his coaching career, Carrick spent time at Middlesbrough, in the English second division. He took over the team in October 2022, when the team was in 21st place in the Championship.

The coach achieved a quick recovery, leading the club to fourth place and the playoffs in his first season. In the following campaign, Middlesbrough also reached the semi-finals of the English League Cup.

Despite this, the team failed to gain access to the English elite, finishing in eighth and tenth place in Carrick's last two seasons, which resulted in his dismissal in June last year.

United secures third place
With 68 points, Manchester United has already secured third place in the Premier League with one round to spare. The team ends the season this Sunday, away from home, against Brighton.

"Michael fully deserved the opportunity to continue leading our men's team," said Jason Wilcox, the club's director of football.

"During his time in charge, we saw positive results on the field, but, above all, an approach aligned with the club's values, traditions and history. Michael's achievements in returning the club to the Champions League should not be underestimated. He created a strong connection with the players and can be proud of the winning culture built at Carrington and in the dressing room, something we continue to develop", he concluded.
