Iran and Pakistan have held advanced talks, Tehran's semi-official Tasnim news agency reported on Friday (22), as Islamabad seeks to broker a diplomatic solution to the United States and Israel's war against Iran.

Pakistan has emerged as a mediator between Washington and Tehran, playing a key role in negotiating a temporary ceasefire to halt planned US attacks in April.

The temporary truce has virtually suspended active hostilities, but the conflict continues, with a naval blockade underway in the Strait of Hormuz.

Pakistan's Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi met with Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi "to consider proposals aimed at resolving the disputes", Tasnim news agency reported on the Telegram messaging app.

A spokesman for Iran's Foreign Ministry said on Wednesday (20) that Tehran and Washington continued to exchange messages through Pakistan, according to state news agency Nour News.

US Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters on Thursday that there were "some good signs" in the negotiations, but that there would be no solution if Tehran imposes a toll system in the Strait of Hormuz, which effectively closed to most shipping after the war began on February 28.

"There are some good signs," Rubio said. "I don't want to be overly optimistic... So let's see what happens in the next few days."

A high-ranking Iranian source told Reuters news agency on Thursday that disagreements had eased, although uranium enrichment and the Strait of Hormuz remained points of friction.

Impacts of war in the Middle East

The war has devastated the global economy, with rising oil prices fueling fears of runaway inflation. About a fifth of the world's oil and liquefied natural gas shipments passed through the Strait of Hormuz before the war.

The US dollar was near its highest level in six weeks on Friday amid uncertainty over peace talks, while oil prices rose as investors doubted prospects for a breakthrough.

"We're coming to the end of week 12, six weeks of ceasefire, and I'm just not convinced that we're any closer to a resolution between the U.S. and Iran," IG market analyst Tony Sycamore said of the war in the Middle East.

US President Donald Trump has said the United States will eventually recover Iran's stockpile of highly enriched uranium - which Washington believes is destined for nuclear weapons production, although Tehran maintains its use is purely peaceful.

"We'll get it. We don't need it, we don't want it. We'll probably destroy it after we get it, but we're not going to let them have it," Trump told reporters at the White House on Thursday.

Two high-ranking Iranian sources told Reuters before Trump's comments that Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei had issued a directive banning the shipment of uranium abroad.

The American president also harshly criticized Tehran's intention to charge fees to ships using the strait.

"We want it to be open, we want it to be free. We don't want tolls," Trump declared. "It's an international waterway."

Tehran presented its latest offer to the US earlier this week.

Descriptions of Tehran suggest that it largely repeats terms that the American leader has previously rejected, including demands such as control of the Strait of Hormuz, compensation for war damages, lifting of sanctions, release of frozen assets and the withdrawal of American troops.
