You've certainly seen some advertisement or someone talking about the importance of coenzyme Q10, but what is it and what is it for?

Coenzyme Q10 is a substance produced naturally by our body and is essential for the proper functioning of cells. It acts mainly on the cellular structure responsible for generating energy and also has an antioxidant function, protecting cells against damage caused by free radicals.

However, with advancing age, the production of this coenzyme tends to decrease, which has led many professionals to recommend supplementation.

"The ideal production of this coenzyme by our body occurs around the age of 25. After this period, its production begins to decline, reaching a reduction of approximately 50% at the age of 65", explains Claudenise Dantas, PhD health nutritionist and researcher.

Some health conditions, such as heart disease, diabetes or people with neurodegenerative diseases such as Parkinson's, or who continually use statins (drugs to control cholesterol), may have lower levels of the substance, also requiring supplementation.

There are also those who use coenzyme with a focus on improving physical and mental disposition, preventing migraines, and even in skin care routines, due to its potential to combat cellular aging.

The recommended daily dosage may vary according to each organism. In general, supplements sold in Brazil have between 50 mg and 200 mg per capsule, and the indication for use usually revolves around one capsule per day.

Although coenzyme Q10 is considered safe and well tolerated, it is not free from side effects. Nausea, abdominal pain, insomnia and headache may occur in some cases, especially when the dose is high. Therefore, even though it is a supplement available without a prescription, ideally it should not be used on your own.

"Coenzyme Q10 is better absorbed when taken after meals, but not all organisms react in the same way. The most common side effects are nausea, heartburn, diarrhea and those who take it at night can sometimes disturb their sleep", adds Valdecy Neto, nutritionist.

There is no exact duration for treatment with Q10. In some cases, doctors recommend continued use; in others, supplementation is temporary, for support in times of greater physical exhaustion or as a complement to the treatment of a health condition. The effects of coenzyme are not immediate and usually appear with regular use, after a few weeks.

Switching off the enzyme can prevent obesity caused by overeating
