During excavations carried out in 2023, archaeologists found the remains of a woman they believe to have belonged to high society in England, providing new evidence about the funerary traditions of the elite at the time.
Located in Colchester, the first capital of Roman Britain, the discovery of the tomb occurred during works where the old Essex County Hospital was located, to build houses in its place.
The discovery was confirmed by Smithsonian magazine. Analysis of the body carried out by archaeologists, which they dubbed the Lady of Lexden, was buried between the 3rd and 5th centuries, in a coffin decorated with lead and accompanied by various funerary objects.

Archaeologists point out that she was between 25 and 35 years old when she died. The outside of the Lady's coffin is decorated with scallop shells and geometric patterns organized in a shape that resembles a diamond.
With the woman, hairpins made of jet, glass vials and traces of incense were found buried. These objects buried next to her may indicate that they were valuable things to have before burial.

It is known that, in Roman Britain, there was a custom of covering the bodies of the deceased with liquid plaster when buried, so much so that the deceased young woman was found like this. However, researchers cannot say exactly why this was done.
However, for archeology, this is an advantage, so the details of the deceased are preserved, even if they died thousands of years ago.

The rarity of lead coffins
In the Roman period, lead coffins were reserved for people with high social positions, whether Christian or not. Only around 400 lead coffins have been discovered in Britain.
The combination of these coffins with the artifacts that were buried together were used not only to preserve the body, but also to guarantee the safe passage from life to death.
It is known, through analyzes of mortal remains, that some of those buried were Romans or from other regions of the Roman Empire. Analyzing the entire context found in this discovery, the researchers associate the woman's identity as being Roman and pagan.
