Continental champions in 2012, Corinthians visited Peñarol, on Thursday night (21), and guaranteed the leadership of Group E by seeking a 1-1 draw, at the Campeón del Siglo, in Montevideo, Uruguay, in the fifth round of the Libertadores group stage.
It is worth noting that the black and white team entered the field with an alternative lineup - goalkeeper Hugo Souza, defenders Gabriel Paulista and Gustavo Henrique and midfielder André were the only potential starters who started the match.
With equality, the black and white team reached 11 points, maintaining their unbeaten record in the Libertadores, while the carboneros hold the top spot in Group E, with three, and have no more chances of a knockout stage. Platense, with seven, would also go to the round of 16 - Santa Fe, with five, would go on to the South American Championship.

The stage began warmly, but Peñarol tried to open the score at the first danger. In the 18th minute, Trindade took a corner from the left, Maxi Oliveira headed it in and scored for the home team. The final stretch of the first half held strong emotions for both sides. The Carboneros scored, at 39, with Umpiérrez, taking advantage of Hugo Souza's mistake, but Arezo, at the beginning of the play, was offside, invalidating the second goal.
The move woke up Corinthians. At 41, in a plot inside the area, Pedro Milans received it from André and splashed it with his left foot, Maxi Oliveira managed to make the deflection, and the good one came out, scraping his foot off the left post. At 43, Kaio César was scared with a header saved by Aguerre after a cross from Angileri. Then, at 44, Labyad placed it in the area, Milans supported it, André, inside the small area, appeared to finish, but hit Pedro Raul, who prevented the certain draw.
Final stage
The second half started the way the first ended: with Corinthians pressing. At six minutes, in a counterattack, Kaio César played Matheus Pereira, who found Labyad on the right edge of the entrance to the area. The Moroccan pulled it inside and hit it dangerously close to the left post. Timão continued to dictate the pace, but had difficulty threatening again. When he succeeded, he left everything the same.
Toque agora.
Kaio César crossed into the area, Aguerre saved Pedro Raul's deflection, and Labyad, attentive to the rebound, poked the ball into the back of the net, scoring for the first time with the black and white shirt and guaranteeing the draw. At 37, Rodrigo Garro took a long shot and stopped in a good save from goalkeeper Carbonero. Desperate for victory, Peñarol tried to attack at the end and gave space for counterattacks, which were not taken advantage of, especially by Yuri Alberto.
Next games
The last round of Group E will be played at 9:30 pm next Wednesday (21), when Corinthians and Peñarol will be the hosts. The black and white team face Platense, at the Neo Química Arena, in São Paulo (SP), while the carboneros face Santa Fe, again in the Campeón del Siglo.
Before taking to the field once again for the Libertadores, however, Timão will host Atlético-MG, at home, at 6:30 pm on Sunday (24), for the 17th round of the Brazilian Championship, in which they appear to be opening the relegation zone to Series B, in 17th place, with 18 points.
Also on Sunday (24), the Aurinegros will visit Defensor, at 6:30 pm, at Luis Franzini, in Montevideo, for the second round of the Torneo Intermedio of the Uruguayan Championship, in which they are one of the four of eight teams in Group B that won in their debut, as well as Boston River, Central Español and Racing.
