Ebola case confirmed in area far from the epicenter of the outbreak in DR Congo

A case of Ebola has been confirmed in the province of South Kivu, in the east of the Democratic Republic of Congo, hundreds of kilometers from the epicenter of the outbreak, the rebel alliance that controls the area said on Thursday (21).

The case, reported in a rural area near the provincial capital, Bukavu, signals the spread of an outbreak that experts say circulated undetected for about two months in Ituri province, several hundred kilometers to the north, before being identified last week.

The outbreak resulted in 160 suspected deaths among 670 suspected cases, and 61 of the cases were confirmed, according to data from the country's Ministry of Health published this Thursday.

Two cases have also been confirmed in neighboring Uganda, which on Thursday announced the suspension of flights to the DRC with effect from the next 48 hours as a precautionary measure.

The WHO declared the outbreak of the Bundibugyo strain of the virus - for which there is no vaccine - a public health emergency of international concern over the weekend.

The Congo River Alliance - which includes the M23 rebels, who have controlled eastern areas since last year - said the 28-year-old patient in South Kivu had died and was safely buried. The individual had left the city of Kisangani, in the north of the country, the alliance said, without detailing the victim's recent movements.

South Kivu health spokesman Claude Bahizire told Reuters on Thursday that two suspected cases had been detected in the province, including the fatal case. The other patient is in isolation awaiting test results, he said.

An Ebola case was also confirmed last week in Goma, capital of the neighboring province of North Kivu, under M23 control.

Protesters attack hospital
In the city of Rwampara, one of the outbreak hotspots in Ituri, clashes broke out on Thursday after the family of an alleged Ebola victim disputed the cause of death and demanded his body, Reuters witnesses said.

Protesters gathered outside the hospital and set fire to tents run by the Alima medical charity, prompting police to fire warning shots and tear gas, witnesses reported.

Hundreds of health centers were attacked by armed groups and angry civilians during the 2018-2020 Ebola outbreak in the east of the country, the second deadliest on record, with almost 2,300 deaths.

Rescuers expect widespread violence across eastern DRC, where dozens of militias operate, and community distrust of medical professionals to further complicate efforts to contain the outbreak.

In Geneva, Jane Halton, president of the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness Innovations (Cepi), told journalists that the confirmed cases announced so far likely represent just "the top of the iceberg."

Cepi, which finances vaccine development, is evaluating potential candidates for Ebola. Halton said it may be possible to achieve Cepi's goal of having a safe and effective vaccine for large outbreaks within 100 days, although this represents "a huge challenge."
