Analysis: In a strategic tie, Trump and Xi control rivalry

In international relations, a draw is a victory for both sides.

In Donald Trump's visit to Xi Jinping, no one won. There was no tension in relations, nor an intensification of rivalry. This is positive for both of them and, above all, for the rest of the world.

Important and delicate issues for both sides - such as the Middle East and the Strait of Hormuz for the US, and Taiwan for China - were left aside. But there were occasional gains.

But, in addition to this factor, Trump and company were unable to take many domestic dividends with them - thinking about the mid-term elections in November.

Beijing, on the other hand, has secured access to some necessary electronic computing components.

And, from an internal point of view for Xi Jinping, he has the idea or image of a leader, a statesman. Xi sought to give the impression of someone who can lead China towards the centenary of the revolution in 2049, within the broad vision of rejuvenating society and restoring Chinese power in the world.

China does not understand that it is an emerging country, an emerging economy. She understands that she went from a country that faced decline in that "century of humiliation", between the 19th century and until the end of the Second World War, to regaining its place in the world.

The meeting between Trump and Xi may have had the power to symbolize this.

Even without a clear definition, this meeting left an institutional mark that conversations between the two countries will continue to deal with sensitive topics that affect the entire world. A world of cooperation continues with tensions, but accommodated within a stable framework for the coming years and committees.
