The total number of students enrolled in higher education worldwide has more than doubled in the last two decades, rising from 100 million in 2000 to 269 million in 2024.

Despite the expansion, regional disparities still exist. While 80% of young people in Western Europe and North America are enrolled in higher education, the number drops to 59% in Latin America and the Caribbean, 37% in the Arab States, 30% in South and West Asia and just 9% in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Women already outnumber men in higher education around the world: in 2024, there were 114 women enrolled in higher education for every 100 men. Gender parity has been achieved in all regions except Sub-Saharan Africa, where lower enrollment and completion rates persist.

The data comes from the first global report from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (Unesco) on trends in higher education, released this week in Paris. The study brings together information from 146 countries.

Private institutions represent a third of enrollments, with a greater share in Latin America and the Caribbean (49% in 2023). In countries such as Brazil, Chile, South Korea and Japan, four out of every five students attend a private higher education institution. The completion of studies did not, however, keep up with the pace of enrollments: the graduation rate rose from 22% in 2013 to 27% in 2024.

In the period studied, the number of people who studied abroad tripled, jumping from 2.1 million in 2000 to almost 7.3 million in 2024. Despite the increase in numbers, mobility benefits only 3% of the total number of students in the world.

The group of seven countries formed by Germany, Australia, Canada, the United States, France, the United Kingdom and Russia continues to receive half of all international students. It is noted, on the other hand, that countries such as Turkey and the United Arab Emirates (UAE) are becoming increasingly popular.

According to the report, international students increasingly prefer to study in their own region. An example is that in Latin America and the Caribbean, the proportion of intraregional mobility rose from 24% to 43% in the period from 2000 to 2022, with Argentina being the main destination.
