Fundada pelo vocalista e guitarrista Kurt Cobain e pelo baixista Krist Novoselic, a banda passou por uma sucessão de bateristas, principalmente Chad Channing, antes de recrutar Dave Grohl em 1990. O sucesso do Nirvana popularizou o rock alternativo, e eles foram frequentemente citados como a banda emblemática da Geração X. Sua música mantém um público fiel e continua a influenciar a cultura do rock.
