Conhecido por sua distinta voz rouca, ele está entre os artistas recordistas de vendas, tendo vendido mais de 120 milhões de discos em todo o mundo. Sua carreira começou em 1962, quando passou a tocar na rua com uma harmônica. Em 1963, juntou-se aos The Dimensions como gaitista e vocalista. No ano seguinte, entrou na Steampacket antes de se mudar para o Jeff Beck Group em 1967. Ao ingressar no Faces em 1969, também iniciou sua carreira solo, lançando seu álbum de estreia, An Old Raincoat Won't Ever Let You Down, naquele ano. Suas primeiras obras eram uma fusão de rock, folk, soul e R&B. Seu terceiro álbum, Every Picture Tells a Story (1971), foi um grande avanço, liderando as paradas no Reino Unido, Estados Unidos, Canadá e Austrália, assim como a canção "Maggie May". Seu trabalho seguinte, Never a Dull Moment (1972), também alcançou o primeiro lugar no Reino Unido e na Austrália, além de chegar ao top três nos EUA e no Canadá.
