The Three Nails

This is some two thousand years ago, as I recall C F Located in Jerusalem, across the street from Pilate's hall [Verse] N.C. I had everything I thought I'd ever need Bb Folks would come from miles around, N.C. regardless of their creed F The only thing I had, N.C. I didn't think I would ever sell, C F Was in a corner on a shelf, three old rusty spike nails [Verse] Bb And then one day, a big Roman soldier came through the door N.C. He walked up to me, it seemed he shook the floor F "Can I help you, Sir?" N.C. I said with the voice I guess seemed frail C He looked at me with a sneering grin and said, F "I wanna buy some big, big nails" Bb "Three old rusty spike is all I have, Sir" N.C. He said, "For me that would do, F for the job I have, three's enough" N.C. "And how much do I owe you?" C He placed some money in my hand, F and I was glad to make the sale N.C. Then I wondered, and I asked him N.C. I said, "Sir, what can you do with three nails?" [Verse] Bb He said, "Did you ever hear of a man, F called Jesus, the Nazarene?" N.C. "You mean the one who goes about doing good?" N.C. He said, "Yes, that's the man" C F He said, "Today I intend to show the world that I'm boss" N.C. "For with this three old rusty spikes, Bb I'm gonna nail Jesus to the cross" [Verse] F I stood there almost numb, N.C. you'd never know how I felt C I said, "Please sir, don't do that!" F As down on my knees I knelt N.C. He just turned and walked away N.C. I got up and followed him Bb I said, "Please, Sir, I'd buy them back" F But he just looked at me and grinned [Verse] C And across a distance, I could see the howling mob F Through the tears that filled my eyes N.C. "Away with him! Crucify him!" N.C. I could hear their angry cries N.C. And over all the groans and the pains of agony N.C. I could hear the sound of a hammer N.C. As that big Roman soldier nailed Jesus to a tree [Chorus] N.C.
