You would think that maybe this is what plays towards the end of the movie as Vito sits with Mike in the garden, sharing his hopes of his son becoming a Senator or a Governor Corleone - continuing with “But it just wasn’t enough time, Michael”. Franco Sciannameo points out in his book The Godfather Trilogy - A Film Score Guide how what underscores that scene is The Godfather Waltz #2, which still is unreleased. For this actual cue, we go way back to Rocco making his bones on Paulie the traitor. The camera focuses on Clemenza briefly reacting to gun shots being fired, who had stepped out of the car to take a leak. It keeps playing through his infamous "Leave the gun, take the cannoli" line, as well as the transition into the next scene of Michael sitting in the garden of the Corleone compound, being called inside by him as he is cooking for the guards. Composed by Nino Rota and conducted by Carlo Savina, this is a segment of what was already released as track no 1. of the 1972 OST as Main Title (The Godfather Waltz). Do not mistake that for another cue from this 2022 re-release, track no. 1 here, Main Title/Corleone Waltz #1. Comparing this to that version, Too Little Time is identical to the former after it's long cornet intro, which is ommitted here. From where the viola joins, it is going to be one and the same track. Meaning that this is the same and not a re-recording or arrangement. This track simply has the acoustic guitar at a lower volume and lacks the final strummed chord which closed the OST track. As such, the previously heard instruments are going to still be present. Having had access to the composer's notes through Sciannameo's book, I was able to correct the names of the instruments. The viola {not violin} now being the opener, soon joined by the accordion {not melodica}, two oboes {not one}, clarinet and lastly the cornet {not trumpet} too making a brief appearance.
