Track no. 17 on disc 2 of The Godfather 50th Anniversary expanded and remastered edition:
This Loneliness.
Composed by Carmine Coppola for the 1972 movie, it plays as the scene transitions into the
George Lucas directed newspaper montage from Michael escaping Louis Restaurant after having
shot Sollozzo and McCluskey. This movie version has hwoever never been released, so we must
watch it if we want to listen or play along. We can see Carmine himself play it at 1:30:23
on an out of tune upright piano! That transposal can be found among my tabs as well.
Later in 1972, another version of this piece was re-arranged for Carmine's The Godfather's
Family Wedding Album for a small orchestra. That transcript again can be found among
my tabs. It is the only one actually featuring a mandolin.
This 50th anniversary version is a re-recording that was initially scrapped from Nino Rota's
1972 OST. It's not known why it was re-recorded or what happened to the original. Just like
the movie version, it is a solo piano performance by Carmine, with a cello acting as a drone
in the background.
The arrangement is however not only differing quite substantially in the ornaments and fills,
but also in tuning: Since the piano was tuned to 440hz here, I was able to transpose it in
standard GDae tuning (compared to the movie version that had to be tuned a semitone lower
in Gb Db ab eb). I once again had to move everything up an octave to account for the bass
notes. The final G note still is going to be out of range for us anyway, so we shall play
it as a natural harmonic. We can also combine finger plucking with plectrum use to access
some of the slash chords which consist of notes in intervals larger than one octave.
