Composed by Nino Rota and conducted by Carlo Savina, this is one of the edits that another cue from this 2022 re-release was based on, The Horse's Head (Film Version). As the other title does suggest, this piece on Rota's score presentation is not what plays in the movie. Used for the film was a sound montage edited by Walter Murch. Quoting The Godfather Trilogy - A Film Score Guide, Franco Sciannameo wrote: "Ultimately, Rota checked all cues he had composed against a 22-page musical suggestions typescript dated December 17, 1971 furnished to him by Paramount’s music editors John C. Hammell, Bill Reynolds, and Walter Murch." The Horse's Head was called Il Cavallo in Rota's notes. This consists of the melody of Michael's Theme or The New Godfather playing in the background, while that of the Main Title or The Godfather Waltz plays on top of it. The many instruments playing over, not just with each other, create a great suspense. Which is identical during quite a few segments to the aforementioned Film Version, but not all of them. It's intro consisting of a trumpet solo does not feature at all here, yet this score presentation version is the longer of the two. This very trumpet solo however too was released as a standalone cue on the same re-release. The densely layered recording consists of a high string section, a cello, accordion, piccolo flute, organ, clarinet, two trumpets and a bassoon; Which's low register we can play as fretted harmonics. Fret the note and place the index finger of the picking hand 12 frets higher, then strike it with the thumb. Transposal to the mandolin in standard GDae tuning.
