The Horse's Head (Film Version).
Composed by Nino Rota, conducted by Carlo Savina and edited by Walter Murch, this is one of the most
memorable scenes of both the book and the movie. Rather than the intended scene of Tom being asked to
leave while having dinner with Jack Woltz and spotting the child actress he had been abusing on his way out,
leading into an extended bit of Connie and Carlo arguing before Tom, Sonny and Vito sit down to discuss both
Woltz and Sollozzo and it then transitioning to a shot of the swimming pool in Woltz's mansion...
The standard theatrical cut instead dissolves from Woltz asking Tom to leave to the shot of the pool. The
camera pans to close in on the fountain as we first hear a trumpet solo playing the melody of The Godfather
Waltz. That's the Main Title or Titolo, as per Rota's notes. The scene transitions to Woltz lying in bed,
slowly waking up as the The Horse's Head, Il Cavallo, as per Rota's notes, is playing. It keeps utilizing
that melody, but then plays against that of The New Godfather or Michael's Theme. With many instruments not
only taking turns, but joining in on each other. This created the dissonance and off-beat, out-of-synch
musical color.
But this film version is not what was actually arranged by Rota for his score presentation. Simply titled
The Horse's Head, that was also put on this 2022 re-release. So was the trumpet solo that, in partial,
functions as the intro here; The Horse's Head (Trumpet Solo). Quoting Franco Sciannemo's book The Godfather
Trilogy - A Film Score Guide on the creation of this scene, Walter Murch explained:
"The music, as it was originally written, was a waltz and it played against the
horror of the event. It was sweet carousel music. You were seeing those horrible images, but the music was
counterpointing the horror of the visuals. Perhaps it needed to be crazier a little earlier. So I tried
something I had done on THX 113830 – layering the music, playing records backwards, turning them upside down,
and slowing them down–a version of what I’d done when I was eleven years old. Nino’s music for the horse’s
head scene had an A, B, A musical structure. That is to say, it had an opening, then a variation, and then a
return to the opening statement. This structure allowed me to make a duplicate of the music, slip the sync of
the second copy one whole musical statement, and then superimpose them together. The music started off A, as
it was written, but then became A+B, simultaneously, and then B+A. You now heard, superimposed on each other,
things that were supposed to be separate in time. So it starts off as the same piece of music, but then
begins, just as Woltz realizes that something is wrong, to grate against itself. There is now a disorienting
madness to the music that builds and builds to the moment when Woltz finally pulls the sheet back."
The first trumpet will later be joined by a second. There is also a high string section. And a clarinet,
piccolo flute, organ, cello and accordion. The lowest register of the bassoon can be played as fretted
harmonics. Fret a note and place the index finger of the picking hand 12 frets higher, then pluck it with
the thumb. Transposal to the mandolin in standard GDae tuning.
