Track no. 35 on disc 1 of The Godfather 50th Anniversary expanded and remastered edition:
The Halls Of Fear Pt. 1 (Film Version).

The interpretation assembled for the 1972 soundtrack was not what played in the picture throughout
Michael's visit to the hospital. Composed by Nino Rota and conducted by Carlo Savina, Rota had
suitably named this melody "Hospital". It would take longer than half a century for it to be released
on the 2022 50th anniversary re-issue, next to to The Halls Of Fear (Extended Version).

Franco Sciannameo's book Nino Rota's The Godfather Trilogy - A Film Score guide confirmed that there
was a recording of The Halls Of Fear Pt. 2. Neither used for the movie, not released since, as of
yet. On Pt. 1, he wrote:

"This cue conveys the desire for vendetta and mounting rage levels are evoked by the sequence’s
chromatic progressions. Michael’s Theme heard here for the first time follows this chord sequence.
one, not Sonny, to execute the family’s vindictive scheme and eventually become the new Godfather.
It is interesting to note here that, upon viewing this scene for the first time, Rota conceived a
much gentler, almost innocent Christmas atmosphere, despite the attempted murder and consequent
mounting rage for vindication. He composed a 77-measure piece called Natale (Christmas)...".

This film version being a completely individual recording, while the OST and extended versions both
play different variations with a similar orchestration. Beyond Michael's Theme, the cue Meditation
is also used. The string section, cello and piano are playing in the background. The middle doing so
with tremolo. With the basoon too being in the background and out of range, it can optionally be
played with fretted harmonics: Fret the note and put the index finger of the picking hand 12 frets
higher, striking it with the thumb. The trumpet and oboe are playing the lead. The percussion,
clarinet and horn also are heard. Mandolin transposal in standard tuning GDae.
