Composed by Nino Rota and conducted by Carlo Savina, this is one of the pieces heard in the opening portion
of the film at Connie's wedding. It plays among Carmine Coppola's compositions The Godfather Tarantella,
The Godfather Mazurka and The Godfather Foxtrot, with mandolinist Giovanni Vicari leading the orchestra.
It later saw an adaption with lyrics by Larry Kusick and Billy Meshel in "Come Live Your Life With Me".
It's first release by Vic Damone and the second by none other than Al Martino, who portrayed Johnny Fontane
in the movies.
Franco Sciannameo quotes Nino Rota in his book The Godfather Trilogy - A Film Score Guide:
"Coppola wished me to underscore the continuous string of murders occurring in the film with the notes of
some kind of waltz, a leitmotiv signifying a recurring cycle devoid of closure. In fact, every time there
is a shootout or a death or a wounded person or many dead or many wounded, what one hears is a waltz theme."
He goes on to analyze: "With these words, the composer summarizes the charge given to him by Francis Coppola
to give the film, Part I in this case, a definite sound imprimatur identified with The Godfather Waltz.
After this theme is heard played by a solo trumpet [cornet] in the film’s Main Title and danced to by Don
Corleone and daughter Connie, it is hard to imagine how it could have been used to underscore murder, if
not playing against the action."
This very re-release has confirmed my previous suspicion that the soundtrack version was edited together
from separate, shorter cues as the fade outs and pauses between the segments would suggest. It lists them
as Main Title / Corleone Waltz #1, Corleone Waltz #2 and Corleone Waltz #3. Combining these cues gives us
the OST recording of The Godfather Waltz in it's entirety as it has been released. These all being the same
recordings and not re-recordings or re-arrangements.
Comparing this to those versions, both start with the trumpet/cornet solo intro Main Title, or "Titolo" as
it was found in Rota's composing notes in both 3/4 as well as 6/8. Afterwards, the order is then flipped:
The orchestra joins and The Godfather Waltz now continues with what would be Corleone Waltz #3, after a
very brief pause plays Corleone Waltz #1 and then moves into Corleone Waltz #2; Which was edited by
giving it an early fade out for this track. Other than that, the segments are identical. This results in the
OST version being edited to progressively increase in tempo with each segment, from andantino to moderato
to allegro.
Frustratingly, Sciannameo reported two other cues used in the movie listed as The Godfather Waltz #4 and
The Godfather Waltz #5, which are not included on this re-release. Corleone Waltz #1 and Corleone Waltz #3
are listed as being used in the movie, while Corleoen Waltz #2 is noted as having been recorded, but not used.
Lastly, do not mistake this for the OST opening track Main Title (The Godfather Waltz), which is an entirely
separate recording with a different orchestration!
The Godfather Waltz found on both the 2022 re-release and 1972 original [also track no. 8 there] are the same
version; But the latter has remastered audio. The augmented quality is what allowed me to revisit my previous
transcript. When I published that some years ago, I focused on the melody line of the mandolin and then that
of the other lead instruments. With this re-release, I'd like to expand upon my transposal and include the
counter melodies as well as the secondary voices I have added since working on the Corleone Waltz cues.
After the aforementioned cornet opens, the piano and string section with pizzicato will be taking turns
providing the rhythm in the background with the guitar, bass and drums. The mandolin, guitar, accordion,
clarinets, oboe and horn play the different voices. The mandolin does with a continuous tremolo
throughout. I do suggest you play everything else as plucked notes. Transcript of the mandolin and transposal
