Track No. 15 on disc 2 of The Godfather 50th Anniversary expanded and remastered edition:
The Godfather Mazurka.
Playing in the movie during Connie's and Carlo's wedding, this Carmine Coppola composition sadly
was not included on Nino Rota's 1972 OST. Which led to him re-recording this song as part of
The Godfather's Family Wedding Album later that year, a version you can also find among my
tabs. Another arrangement followed on his 1977 The Godfather Suite with a slightly different
title: The Godfather's Mazurka. This recording intended for the original soundtrack was finally
released in 2022.
The small orchestra in this version is what we hear in the film, as well: A clarinet, piano,
drums, brass and a mandolin. It was conducted by Coppola. Transcript of said mandolin part in
GDae standard tuning. Think of this as cycling through three different segments. The segment
order of the song is: The first, second, first, third and first. Said first one will be played
in three different variations. The main melody we are already acquainted with from the
Family Wedding Album, OST and movie scenes are supported by break-neck-speed arpeggiated lines
"in between" the bars. Economy picking is strongly adviced here, carefully planning down-
and upstrokes in the direction of the string the next note is going to be plucked on.
