Track No. 16 on disc 2 of The Godfather 50th Anniversary expanded and remastered edition:
The Godfather Foxtrot.
Playing in the movie during Connie's and Carlo's wedding, this Carmine Coppola composition
sadly was not included at all on Nino Rota's 1972 OST. There, his other two works
The Godfather Tarantella and The Godfather Mazurka saw a partial release as an audio rip
from the movie set in the mash up track titled Connie's Wedding. This led to
him re-recording this song as part of The Godfather's Family Wedding Album later that year,
a version you can also find among my tabs. Another arrangement followed on his 1977
The Godfather Suite with a slightly different title: The Godfather's Foxtrot.
This recording intended for the original soundtrack was finally released in 2022.
The small orchestra conducted by Coppola in this version is what we hear in the film,
as well. A clarinet, piano, drums, guitar, brass and a mandolin. Transcript of said
mandolin part in GDae standard tuning. While we are already acquainted with the melody
line from the OST, Family Wedding Album and movie scenes, the mando plays more of a
percussive role in this verison. Chop chords are liberally applied while hitting many
muted strokes and random (dare I say, wrong?) notes. It must have been hard for the
mandolinist to hear himself under all that brass. But while the mando part is pretty
rough in isolation, it does blend in fairly well with the other instruments. The concept
of relegating to (almost) chordal play is befitting of the song's esprit, either way!
After the intro, the rest are turn based, seemingly endless variations of the same lines
over and over again. Part one are the first four bars. About ten seconds later, it's
part two with the second four bars. Then a new cycle. Carmine even lets us catch our
breath for twenty seconds towards the end, as the piano solos.
