The Godfather Finale.
This is one of the longest renditions of the score intended for use in the credits with 3:53. On this same
re-release, we find another shorter variation titled End Credits, as well as yet another one running for
the same time as this variation, End Credits (Alternate). What actually did play after the end of the
movie was cut down further and never released. Because of the minor differences in how they slightly
diverge in tempo, volume and notes over the course of the tracks, we know at least End Credits and
End Credits (Alternate) to be separate recordings, with The Godfather Finale compiled for the OST
and the actual credit roll edited for the film possibly having been merged together from parts of
those. Not to be mistaken with another preceeding cue we too find on this 2022 re-release; Finale
[the last score cue used before the credits do begin to roll].
The Godfather Finale was previously issued already on the 1972 OST (also track no. 12). The two versions
are one and the same, with this re-issue having remastered audio. I took the chance to expand upon my
tablature from a few years ago when I only focused on the main melody line and include the secondary
voices and accents here, as well. This is the only variation of the aforementioned tracks that features
a vocal chorus. The instruments used are two mandolins, violins, a viola, two cellos, an oboe, clarinet,
flute, horn, piano, guitar, harp, trumpet, accordion and bassoon. Since the latter mostly plays out of
range for us, I transposed it with fretted harmonics, optionally: Fret down a note and place the index
finger of the picking hand 12 frets higher, striking the fret with the thumb. The mandolins are playing
within octaves of one another and do so with a sustained tremolo throughout.
Composed by Nino Rota and conducted by Carlo Savina, this is a highlight reel of sorts, playing through
the most poignant themes. The track End Title would later perform the same function in 1974's The Godfather
Part II. The Godfather Finale plays through Michael's Theme or The New Godfather, Apollonia, Love Theme
From The Godfather and Main Title or The Godfather Waltz. These were all cues recorded by an orchestra for
this montage, not re-used assets from earlier recordings of said themes as they appeared in the film or on
the soundtrack. Transcription of the mando parts and transposal of the other instruments in GDae
standard tuning.
