Or really... Tracks! As this is a mashup of two cues. While they do play after one another in the movie,
quite some time passes between them. Sollozzo's theme begins as Vito asks Tom about his prison record before
deciding whether to make a narcotics deal with the Tattaglia family. That scene plays out. Then Luca's theme
starts after Vito later asks Tom to bring him into the office after said negotiation. On this re-release, the
theme will move on from the former to the latter at 1:27 after a momentary fade out.
Composed by Nino Rota and conducted by Carlo Savina, this is a relatively low pitch recording with violas
and cellos steady throughout. The clarinet joins during the second bar to play the brief lead melody. Later,
the horn will play accents.And while the melody hints at The Godfather Waltz in places, Rota went for what he
surely thought of as an "oriental" theme for Sollozzo's dealings in Turkey. It is almost what I know in Greek
music as hitzaz (hijaz in Turkish and Arabic) and I think it should amount to something along the lines of
Phrygian in Western music theory. Interestingly,the violas and cellos are not playing within octaves or
thirds/fourths/fifths of one another, but rather one ascending the scale run while the other descend it.
This creates the effect of them not playing "with", but rather "against" one another. Transposal to the
mandolin in standard tuning GDae.
