Track No. 13 on disc 1 of The Godfather 50th Anniversary expanded and remastered edition: Manhattan Serenade.
The music was composed by Louis Alter, as part of a movement titled Manhattan Suite (including Manhattan
Moonlight and Manhattan Masquerade). It's original 1928 lyrics were written by Howard Johnson. It later
received a new set of lyrics by Harold Adamson in the 1940s.
In the movie, this plays at 0:27:00 as consigliere and family lawyer Tom Hagen is travelling to Los Angeles
to meet movie producer Jack Woltz. Nino Rota had originally composed a piece titled Hollywood for that scene.
Which shares many aspects with another score piece of his that did not make it into the movie, but onto the
soundtrack: The Pickup (track no. 3 on the 1972 OST). The studio deemed Hollywood too upbeat for the scene
and demanded it be swapped out, not even releasing it on the soundtrack.
Peter King then arranged and conducted this instrumental big band take explicitly for the movie scene
with the Hollywood Studio Symphony. He based it on Tommy Dorsey's 1942 version (which featured Jo Stafford on
vocals). Due to these nebulous circumstances, people erronously claim that what we hear in the film is a
remaster of Dorsey's recording. Sadly, Manhattan Serenade too got booted from the OST and left entirely
unreleased until 2022. This 50th anniversary edition includes the entire recording, uncut and without movie
set noise or sound effects. Hollywood also made it to this re-release (track no. 2 on disc 1).
[Quite funny, considering the real life events inspiring Johnny Fontane being bought out of his contract by
Luca Brasi. A certain Tommy Dorsey agreed to let Frank Sinatra out of his contract for $1 after the latter's
very own godfather Willie Moretti convinced him to do so. The reason Hagen flies out to make a deal with
Woltz, is because Fontane is trying to land a movie role that would revive his dwindling career. Sinatra
allegedly again used mob connections to secure his part in 1953's From Here to Eternity, enabling him to stay
in the spotlight. Mario Puzo did not just base Fontane on Sinatra, but also on Al Martino. Who in turn very
openly requested support from his actual godfather Russell Bufalino to portray this character.]
Transposal to the mandolin from the lead trumpets and clarinets, the brass and string sections backing them
and a short piano roll. There are also a bass and drums heard. Since there will be two octaves or even
different parts playing at the same time in many places, I edited the tab spacing and bracket length to
reflect their interplay. Standard tuning GDae.
