Main Title (The Godfather Waltz).
In his book Nino Rota's The Godfather Trilogy - A Film Score Guide, Franco Sciannameo writes:
"Many of the film’s episodes involve multitudes of people similar to operatic choral scenes designed to
showcase the production’s full cast of characters including many extras (Mazzini and Verdi’s masses) ably
choreographed by the film’s director. Now, before lifting the curtain of my hypothetical operatic stage, I
analyze the very brief Prelude, i.e. the Main Title music as it is heard at the beginning of each part of
the trilogy, which as Marcia J. Citron [Operatic Style and Structure in Coppola’s Godfather Trilogy] noticed,
the internal structure of this motive has a formality resembling a curtain-raiser in the opera–something akin
to the formality of the curse at the start of Rigoletto, or the D-minor chords that begin Don Giovanni...”
Composed by Rota and conducted by Carlo Savina, the track consists of two seperate cues. Main Title is
the cornet solo that opens the movie; Called "Titolo" in Nino's files and notated in both 6/8, as well
as 3/4. The cornet bit is then extended in this version, as more brass comes in. This extended version
would be released on the 2022 re-issue as Main Title (Alternate) [track no. 30 on disc 1]. Meaning that
they are the same recording, not a re-recording or arrangement.
After the viola solo, the rest of the orchestra joins for a variation of the Godfather Waltz. The naming
decision is a bit unfortunate here, as the 1972 soundtrack version of the Godfather Waltz [track no. 8 there]
is a different piece - Not to be be mistaken with one another. This version has a different orchestration
and slightly slower tempo; Loosely andante. And unlike that, this one features no mandolin. The strings
played with pizzicato will be the rhythm in the background over the bass and guitar. A clarinet, two oboes
and an accordion feature as well. This second part would form the basis of the cue Too Little Time [trackno. 23 on disc 1],
also found on this re-issue. Meaning that they too are the same recording, just
edited differently.
Comparing these versions to one another, the first segment of Main Title (The Godfather Waltz) is identical
to Main Title (Alternate) and the second segment is a different edit in Too Little Time. But is neither
identical to, nor edited from the actual Godfather Waltz.
Previously released on the 1972 original [also track no. 1 there] before the 2022 re-release, both have
the same version of Main Title (The Godfather Waltz). Though this re-release does have remastered audio.
The increased quality got me reworking my previous transposal. When I published that, I already included
some secondary voices beyond the melody line, but had misidentified some of the instruments. Since
having completed Main Title (Alternate) and Too Little Time, as well as having read Sciannameo's guide,
I have added the rest. Transposal to the mandolin in standard tuning, GDae.
