Track no. 16 on disc 1 of The Godfather 50th Anniversary expanded and remastered edition:
Love Theme From The Godfather (Film Version).
First heard as the scene transitions from a recovering Don Vito in his New York home being told
the news of Michael having killed Sollozzo and McCluskey, to shots of the Sicilian countryside.
The version that ended up on the original 1972 soundtrack [track no. 7 there] was actually never
used in the movie. The theme was composed by Nino Rota and conducted by Carlo Savina.
This film version is, in fact, the same recording as the 1972 soundtrack version and was used as
it's base. The OST was edited to extend the track's length with a guitar outro and overdub a vocal
choir, bass, drums and mandolin; All lacking here. This version also has the harp less prominent.
In my first transcript of the soundtrack version from years ago, I transcribed the mandolin part and
transposed the melody line of the other instruments. With this re-release, I have expanded upon my
tablature to involve the secondary voices. I transposed the main string section an octave higher to
give room for the lower second and third voices. Other than the strings, there is also a clarinet,
an oboe, a flute and an accordion. Transposal in GDae standard tuning.
A bit more history on this piece: The motif was first used in 1958 for the movie Fortunella. And,
going back to The Godfather, for the track Apollonia. It was the first of the two cues written by
Nino. In Part III, it became Brucia La Terra. It also was re-used as a segment of very many other
tracks in the film trilogy. Soon re-arranged with lyrics written by Larry Kusik as Speak Softly, Love,
Andy Williams first released his version. Al Martino,who portrayed Johnny Fontane in the films,
too recorded one! Sicilian, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese, French, Greek, Czech, Croatian, German,
Japanese and more versions followed over the next few years.
