Track no. 19 on disc 2 of The Godfather 50th Anniversary expanded and remastered edition:
Connie's Wedding (Music Only).
Composed and conducted by Carmine Coppola for the film, the first few bars are from his composition
The Godfather Tarantella, the rest from his The Godfather Mazurka. Both are heard being performed live
by the wedding band featuring mandolinist Giovanni Vicari during the movie's opening segment. As the
title would suggest, those are scenes of Connie's and Carlos' Wedding at the Corleone compound. His
The Godfather Foxtrot from the same scenes has strangely been omitted from this edit. Franco Scianmameo
details the band in his book The Godfather Trilogy - A Film Score Guide: "The orchestra consisting of
playing The Godfather Waltz by Nino Rota"... A piece which did see a full standalone edit from
shorter, separate cues on the original soundtrack release.
Connie's Wedding was a mashup track that was edited together from excerpts of the Tarantella and Mazurka
for the 1972 OST (track no. 4), with some audio overlays of people talking and applauding. This was done
in post-production and is not a field recording of the actual movie set noises. The 2022 re-release gives
us the same track, still edited together from and at the same parts, but now remastered and without said
overlays opening, transitioning and closing the segments. Therefore Connie's Wedding (Music Only) has
a shorter duration of 1:25, cut down from the OST version of 1:33.
This improved audio allowed me to spot the mando that had actually been playing, albeit faintly, on
this track all along. In my transposal from 2021, I wrote out the high octave the clarinet lead with,
as well as the low octave the trumpet joined with. This time, I was able to write out the mando part
as it was recorded. If you account for the different start points, the actual music on the tracks is
the same. So my old transposal can be used interchangably with this one, should you want to include
those voices. Mandolin transcript in GDae standard tuning.
