Composed by Nino Rota and conducted by Carlo Savina. Taking turns with two other cues; Sicilian Pastorale and Love Theme From The Godfather in all extended cuts such as The Godfather Saga where more otherwise removed Sicily scenes scored with music are incorperated, as well as the standard theatrical release. The book Nino Rota's The Godfather Trilogy - A Film Score Guide by Franco Sciannameo confirms that Apollonia was the mother cue which The Love Theme was made from - Not the other way around. Since they both use the same melody, this too naturally is based on his previous 1958 theme for the movie Fortunella. On creating the score at Francis Ford Coppola's request, Sciannameo quotes Rota: "I remained a little perplexed, thinking that it would have been superfluous to invent something new. So I selected four or five themes I had composed for other films of Southern Italian flavor and embarked, as usual, upon inflicting my friends with a choice of their own about the most suitable of those themes. Finally, we concluded that a theme composed some fifteen years earlier had the right potential. It was a theme originally conceived as a sprightly, teasing little march." Both the 1972 OST and this 2022 anniversary soundtrack feature the same version of Apollonia, the latter simply having remastered audio. This improved listening experience enabled me to locate the second mandolin that Sciannameo had previously described from Rota's composer's notes and was too drowned out in the original release. It plays at lower volume which I notated as ghost notes, an octave higher from the louder first mando. Both of them play with a continuous tremolo for every note. Half way through, they will drop down an octave as the accordion joins in on the melody line, as well as later finishing with some chords. That should be played with plucked and strummed notes. The guitar is still playing in the background. I used the opportunity to expand upon my transcript from a few years and include the voices surrounding the main that I could not include last time.
