"Steal Away"
by J.D. McPherson (originally by Jimmy Hughes)
tabbed by Jim Ferraiolo (jmfguitartabs@gmail.com)
A very unique twist on an old Jimmy Hughes song found on J.D. McPherson's tiny but
mighty "The Warm Covers
EP". At first, I thought this might be a baritone guitar, but I think it's actually
just a regular guitar
with its low E string tuned down to C. You can certainly play it without doing that,
but you don't get the
same "sinister" feel. Add a light amount of drive and perhaps some tremolo and enjoy!
Note that I'm going to submit the UG tuning as standard because it can easily be played
in standard, and
there's no CADGBE tuning to select (Dropped C is something else entirely).
[Intro and Main Riff]
Let that low C ring if you can, and bend that first Eb (1st fret, D string) up a quarter
tone, as you might
a blues curl. This figure repeats throughout the song. Sometimes he slides from 1 to 3
on the A string and
sometimes its a hammer. A lot of this song's tension comes from the sound of this riff
and the Eb note
clashing against the C7 chord. The harmonies, especially in the first verse, are all
implied and the
riff and bass are what really carry things until the organ comes in in the second verse.
