Formada por Ryan Tedder e Zach Filkins, a banda alcançou sucesso no MySpace. Em 2006, eles assinaram com a gravadora Mosley Music Group, e lançaram seu álbum de estreia, Dreaming Out Loud (2007). O primeiro single do álbum, "Apologize", remixado por Timbaland, tornou-se um sucesso internacional, alcançando o primeiro lugar em dezesseis países, o 2º lugar na Billboard Hot 100 e, posteriormente, rendendo-lhes uma indicação ao Grammy.
