Don Henley e Glenn Frey. A gravação original da música apresenta Henley como vocalista principal e termina com um icônico dueto de guitarra executado por Felder -- com uma guitarra Gibson EDS-1275 de braço duplo -- e Joe Walsh -- com uma Fender Telecaster -- que intercalam o solo antes de harmonizar e tocar arpejos juntos. A letra da música inspirou uma diversidade de interpretações por fãs e críticos. Os próprios Eagles descreveram-na como sua "interpretação da vida nobre em Los Angeles ". No documentário History of the Eagles de 2013, Henley afirmou que a música era sobre "uma jornada da inocência à experiência ... isso é tudo."
