[Verse 1]
C G D G
How bright the stars, how dark the night
C G D
How long have I been sleeping?
Am G D G
Sleep overtook me on my westward flight
C G D
Held me in its keeping
Am G D Em
I had a dream--it seemed so real!
C G D
Its passing left me shaking.
Am G D G
I saw you here behind the wheel,
C G D G
On this very road I'm taking.

[Verse 2]
C G D G
Hurtling west through the prairie night
C G D
Under the spell of motion
Am G D G
Your eyes were keen and bright in the dashboard light
C G D
Dreaming of the western ocean
Am G D Em
The dusty towns left far behind
C G D
Mountains drawing ever nearer
Am G D G
Your face was then as it was tonight;
C G D G
Ever young, ever dearer

[Verse 3]
C G D G
(Spoken) I know this road and its every curve
C G D
(Sung) Where the hills commence their climbing
Am G D G
We rested here if my memory serves
C G D
The northern lights were shining
Am G D Em
You lit a smoke, we shared some wine
C G D
We watched the sky in wonder
Am G D G
Your laughter echoes after all this time
C G D G
In that high and wide blue yonder

[Solo]

[Verse 4]
C G D G
I don't know why I write these lines
C G D
It's not like I could send you the letter
Am G D G
It's that I love you more after all this time
C G D
It's that I wish I'd known you better
Am G D Em
The years have slipped beneath my wheels
C G D
Dwindling in my rear view mirror
Am G D G
As time has passed, your life has seemed less real
C G D G
But these night drives bring you nearer

[Verse 5]
C G D G
So tonight I'll wish upon these stars
C G D
As they rise upward to guide me
Am G D G
That I'll see you here just as you are
C G D
Now, as then, beside me
Am G D Em
Scares me how the years have flown
C D
Like the leaves drift in September
Am G D G
They've lost sight of you as your legend's grown
C G D G
But this road and I, we remember

[Outro]
C G D G
