Nascido Linda Pettifer, em Hackney, Thompson se tornou um dos mais reconhecidos nomes, e vozes do movimento folk rock britânico dos anos 1970 e 1980, em colaboração com o ex-marido e colega de folk rock britânico lenda, o guitarrista Richard Thompson, e mais tarde, como uma artista solo. Live Aid foi um concerto realizado em 13 de julho de 1985. O evento foi organizado por Bob Geldof e Midge Ure com o objetivo de arrecadar fundos a fim de acabar com a fome na Etiópia. Os shows foram realizados no Wembley Stadium em Londres e no John F. Kennedy Stadium na Filadélfia. Alguns artistas apresentaram-se também em Sydney, Moscou e no Japão.
