Sakers é provavelmente mais conhecido na comunidade de ficção científica como um palestrante convidado frequente em convenções de ficção científica. O acidente do ônibus (português brasileiro) ou vaivém (português europeu) espacial Challenger ocorreu em 28 de janeiro de 1986 no litoral de Cabo Canaveral quando o ônibus espacial Challenger se desintegrou aos 73 segundos da missão STS-51-L, matando seus sete tripulantes, o primeiro acidente fatal do programa espacial dos Estados Unidos durante um voo. A missão era a décima do orbitador e a vigésima quinta do Programa Ônibus Espacial. Seu objetivo era lançar um satélite de comunicações e estudar o cometa Halley, além de levar a professora Christa McAuliffe ao espaço, o que resultou em um interesse público maior do que o normal, com o lançamento e acidente sendo assistidos ao vivo em várias escolas dos Estados Unidos.
