Lançado em 8 de janeiro de 2016, no aniversário de 69 anos de Bowie, o álbum foi gravado secretamente na cidade de Nova Iorque com seu co-produtor de longa data, Tony Visconti, e um grupo de músicos de jazz locais: Donny McCaslin (saxofone), Jason Lindner (piano), Tim Lefebvre (baixo) e Mark Guiliana (bateria). Ben Monder e James Murphy contribuíram com guitarra e percussão adicionais, respectivamente. O álbum contém "Lazarus", do musical de 2015 de mesmo nome, e versões regravadas das canções de 2014 "Sue " e "'Tis a Pity She Was a Whore".
